Venator – Psychodrome (2025)

Malaise shares a space between underground metal, heavy metal, and classic jazz: the greats came and left such a legacy that few stand up to it, and little can be so distinctive that it will gain the status of perceived greatness, so most stay away.

Some brave warriors linger on, mostly treating their art like a cross between a hobby and a religion, and from this comes some hopeful stirrings of the air such as Venator, which brings its own voice to a hybrid of Judas Priest, Mercyful Fate, and Scorpions.

Riffs repurpose classic tropes just enough to give them a unique spin, and songs rehash familiar feelings with a sentimental mood unique to this band, a kind of wistful hope with the nostalgia of those who — like most metalheads — were forced to grow up too soon, and want to rediscover that world of adventure.

I like it but if it’s not a reference to the pointing normie meme then color me surprised and also unimpressed.

    2. Christ is Homsar says:

They’re pitching 70’s metal, of course they’re going to use 70’s artwork, it would be stupid and retarded to use something “contemporary.”

      1. Anus Playground Deceit says:

        No such thing anyway

This is gay, but I like it.

Don’t discourage the Brett, at least for once it’s something about actual metal what I believe is supposed to be a metal site, instead of long-winded Nietzschean-Platonic-Ethno-Fisting.

Not Grave Danger cool, but cool

    1. Aaron GoldBOIG says:

They aren’t even that cool. Never pay retail!

But mr brett thats a wojack! You got tricked! Also crystal logic has like 4 times riffs per song that are 10 times more real and iconic but you wont give it nearly as fair a shake so like derp consistency error much XD

    1. Sammath is the only modern straightforward metal band I kind of give a shit about says:

This site is basically a forum now and yet another place for Brett to wheeze on about his misgivings for the kids these days. The old shit was better.

          thx

It’s important to note that Brett’s prime function in the world is to tell us that we’re white, and we’re not living in American History X, but rather in Malcolm in the Middle, and that we need to create diversity, or else he’d be out of a job.

The goal of parasites is to create tension where there is none.

more like growing pains mixed well with clarissa explains it all and garnished with the secret world of alex mack

Brutal summary of the bitch ‘n moan crowd in these comments.

You know why I love Tarantino, because he weeds out the tares – if you’re moronic enough to try these things you get what you deserve. 666 is not the number of the beast, and if you stab someone to reanimate them with a long needle out of a heroin-snuffed coma, you’re probably just going to kill them, and that infamous Samuel Jackson Ezekiel verse is nowhere to be found in the original Hebrew Bible, as the dude just made it up (ingeniously if I say so myself).

            1. Tarantino (Italian for “spider theft”) is receding into the 1990s where he always belonged. Those movies look amateurish these days. Weirdly, Lord of the Rings and Zodiac still hold up.

Not everything has to be great, trash is needed to make greatness stand out.

Besides, you dare blaspheme the 90’s, don’t know you that was the peak of culture, for better and for worse? At least people then were goofy/brave enough to try new things, unlike now where everything is controlled, censored and over-educated.

Yes, over-education is damnable because it kills creativity and exploration, but you didn’t hear that from me.

We had semi-functional cultures then. Gen X kids saw the decline coming and knew enough of the past to see what would be lost.

Part of the bureaucratization of life, itself a product of over-socialization.

Salmon is my favorite food because I grew up in the nothern realms, and I can’t help it, I have been accused for being an inbred about that, but… we Scandinavians just eat a lot of fish, so get over it okay. Yes I love fish and I can’t help it.

  7. Anal Rapist says:

My real name is Frey Helvig, the coolest name ever, the Queen of Scandinavia.

Hey Brett (or anyone else), do you have any recommendations for someone who’s virtually new at pipe smoking? I did it for a little while in college which was a while ago and probably did a bad job at it anyway but I did enjoy it. Been wanting to give it a shot again lately. Do you have any recommendations as far as a pipe, tobacco or technique goes? I don’t mind spending some money so not necessarily interested in doing it on a budget if it’s worth it. There’s at least one good shop around here where I know I’ll be able to find whatever I want.

Also been wanting to check out snus which I have no experience with.

    1. You might find this relevant (under the pipe smoking tag). It really depends on where you are and what you can get. If I were starting out tomorrow: decent not fancy pipe, maybe a cob, and some Prince Albert or Carter Hall until you get the technique down. Then start tasting a wide variety of stuff and you will find what you personally like that way.

      1. 666 says:

hey, amsterdam shag, one of the stops on my descent lately back into nicotine addiction, starting with american spirits which fucking suck, on to the shag, and then a pack of romeo y julieta cigarillos. had to throw the stokkebyes out last night because by the bottom of the bag it starts to get really nasty imo and makes me feel like shit

        1. The shag started tasting bad? Is it in a high humidity area?

For domestic bag tobacco, I endorse Ohm Natural. A little rough but a very serviceable pile Burley. When I am away from my usual haunts, I pick up a bag of this and mix in aromatic like Captain Black for a little extra flavor.

Amsterdam Shag has never done me wrong but it helps to make sure it is fresh. If the package is a reddish color and not black, that is the older stock.

          1. 666 says:

It is humid here. I’ll try out that Ohm sometime.

            1. If your humid is like our humid, visit the Tobacco Barn.

      2. Flying Kites says:

The only cobs in my hood were glued together very messily. I was able to pick up a $25 pipe anyway, standard wood bowl and detachable stem. Currently practicing keeping Prince Albert lit, and keeping my relights low. Not doing too great on that yet, taking three to five relights to finish a bowl about inch and a half or less depth. Probably tamping technique issue?

        1. IMHO if the cob looks slobby, avoid it. There are a lot of clones and the Missouri Meerschaum (which so far for me have been pretty good) are worth the extra $5-10.

How much have you pressed down on the bowl? It is not guaranteed to be easy to light anything, and PA is a bit damp. But generally, fill rather than “pack” (term is reserved for sodomy!!!) the bowl, and you will be OK.

  9. Nuclear Whore says:

I’m a metalhead and I buy records by their covers. This one is good! I’ll remember it! Ugh!

OTOH, recommending a lot the band Altar of Gore: their first two records are the stuff I love in DM: riffs, good grave sound, atmosphere, bad vibes, monolithism [sic], variation, good artwork, zero pretensions. Go for it! Merry Christmas!

  10. Dorkthrone says:

Hwy Brett – sorry to hear you were forced to grow up tpo soon. Perhaps you coyld recapture some of that lost youth by listening to shitty 80s metal and writing the odd blog post?

  11. Thrash is better than Black or Death says:

Yeah, Venator is enjoyable. Reminds me of Night, a band from Sweden.
