We live in an inauthentic era because we have no reference points in common except mass culture, therefore most of what we do consists of throwing a dozen aesthetics in a blender, coming up with a unique combination, and using it as the basis for our careers, health of the genre be damned.

At some point, one must admit that all religion is the same at its core: you either believe in some divine force underlying life and pushing it toward good, or not. Everything else is grafted-on control methods to fit the culture that produced the religion in order to keep it healthy.

All post-metal is basically a ripoff of what Godflesh did on Streecleaner mixed with what bands like Ras Algethi pioneered, and when you combine post-metal and modern metal — a hybrid of speed metal and death metal with influences from late hardcore — you end up with something like Static Abyss.

In the metal community, like everywhere else, it is popular to hate on Christ because he is seen as the enemy of the total state simply because conservatives are trying to use Christianity as their competitor and substitute for the overwhelmingly popular idea of equality.

Imagine a genre: it succeeds, so then all these lost people come in and make their own versions of it, trying every possible variation. Down at the Texas border, in the fluid zone between clearly defined loci of control, you can find what might be described as an alternate state of reality. Yet another week passes as we watch the cope-hope reach maximum intensity through a form of frustrated and impotent rage. The narrative has failed; those who have staked their futures and wasted their pasts on the system find themselves both enraged and possessed of a furor to suppress those who step out of line. If this system fails, they will all feel as if they have made the wrong choices in life, so they are going to patch it up again to see if they can keep it kicking long enough to make it into the comforting sleep of Alzheimers or fentanyl.

They always tell you to “think outside the box,” as if having everyone focused on non-conformity will result in anything but a new variety of conformity. So much of life comes back to the mirror image, where we are staring at a representation of ourselves, and trying to change how it looks, despite everything happening in reverse since left is right and right left.
