#Metalgate: MetalSucks Reaffirm Themselves as Social Justice Warriors and Leftist Apologists by Misinterpreting Metal Lyrics

axl rosenberg anime

Axl Rosenberg (Matt Goldberg) of metalcore blog MetalSucks recently reaffirmed his website’s social justice warrior stance in an editorial entitled “Stop Saying Politics Have No Place in Metal”. Rosenberg points out that Tony Iommi’s guitar tone was a direct result of the  socioeconomic circumstances of his upbringing but incorrectly assumes that Black Sabbath’s lyrics were written by Ozzy Osbourne’s even rougher childhood when they were in fact primarily written by Geezer Butler who was obsessed with the occult, the work of Aleister Crowley, and horror fiction and films. Rosenberg then uses the lyrics from “War Pigs” to attempt to show that Black Sabbath had strong political undercurrent. All dedicated fans of the band know that the song was originally titled “Walpurgis” about the Witches Sabbath on Walpurgis Night and the label forced them to change the title as they thought it too overly satanic. The anti-war lines are just expressing that politicians and generals sending off young men to die for only the benefit of the leaders in the rear is evil too and actually reflects popular opinions of World War I as much as Vietnam. Attempting to attach any political significance to these is preposterous.

#Metalgate: Vince Neilstein Calls Out Varg Vikernes’ “White Privilege”, Reneges on Apology to Destroyer 666, and Attempts to Cover His Tracks

Metalsucks Varg Destroyer 666 original

Vince Neilstein (Ben Umanov) of scenester social justice warring metalcore blog MetalSucks called Varg Vikernes of Burzum racist for stating that the Western liberal media do not feature the heroism and cultural achievements of white men, specifically Alexandre Migues who helped stopped the Islamic fundamentalist terrorist truck driver in France last week, as it doesn’t their promote their multicultural agenda. Neilstein then reneged on his apology to K.K. Warslut from Destroyer 666:

But what else should we expect from Varg? Perhaps he should invite his buddy from a certain Australian black metal band for a weekend at his home in the French countryside so they can lament the struggles of white men everywhere as they drink their fine, white privilege wine and kiss and cuddle by the fireside.

Not only did Vince/Ben go back on his word to not call Destroyer 666 cock rock stage banter racist again, he made a gay joke which surely won’t endear him to his overly-sensitive social justice warrior hipster readers. Later, Vince tried to backpedal on the current version of the page:

#Metalgate: Destroyer 666 Doxx MetalSucks

destroyer666-band

Destroyer 666 expressed their displeasure with MetalSucks and Invisible Oranges’ social justice warring on their Facebook page:

Los Angeles,,a perfect storm to finish an amazing whirlwind tour.
Our sincere gratitude to all who came out and supported us.
We`d all like to extend a thanks to Paul Dunski for putting it altogether for us,Ares Kingdom for being so fkn great and upstanding men and Sharon of Derketa and Oath of Cruelty.
And to all those who took the time to speak to us in person and express their disbelief and contempt for the tirade of lies and bullshit spread by Matt Goldberg who hides behind the name of Axl Rosenberg and Ben Umanov the liar behind the name Vince Neilstein (His address is posted below folks)along with the little lying dishonest whore who calls herself Blair Hopkins and ‘writes’ for Invisible Oranges and seemed more intent on advertising her attractiveness to drunks than she was in writing an honest review. Clearly your insecure about your looks woman and felt a burning desire to advertise just how irresistible you are.To drunks.Sad desperate bitch.
Despite almost every comment on all their platforms callin them out for being lying cunts, they still have not removed, corrected or amended any of their ‘articles’.

We have considered making a statement to dispel the bullshit and clarify our position for those gullible enough to fall for this SJW virtue signalling garbage. But how does one argue with a fool with an axe to grind and clicks to collect for their advertising revenues?
By stating the obvious facts? These fkn clowns are fact resistant. And they could have got the fact themselves.Isnt that what journalists are meant to do?By goin through every one of their groundless claims and disproving them? Thereby validating their right to make accusations against anyone they see fit? By trotting out every non-white (Left approved) friend I have to show Im ‘cool’ and hip to the shit? That to me reeks of fkn racism. And God damn am I so fkn sick of that word. These vermin throw the word around so damned often its losing any meaning whatsoever and only serves to undermine any real and serious instances of it. And off course, the fact Ive never written a racist lyric in my life and Ive never used the band to denigrate another race…well that dont matter does it?,cos it dont fit their narrative.Theyll get round that any way they can.My view has always been the same,NO race should be made to feel ashamed of the colour of their skin.NOT ONE.
And it could well be asked what good would come of it?They clearly wont retract their articles even when fans from the show tell them its a lie,(because they exist from the clicks?).
These fk-knuckles insult myself, the band and our supporters alike with their complete disregard for the truth..And I cant help thinking it has helped to weed out the gullible and the spineless from our ranks. Not to mention increased shirt sales on our site. For anyone dumb enough to still have ‘doubts’,go read all the comments left by people on all thier sites. If that aint enough. Then just go Fk yaself.Sell our records, burn our shirts, dont come to the shows and dont come here to this page to looking for attention for yourself. Its really that fkn easy.It aint Nazi rocket science.
End of the day Im an old fashioned kinda fella and now that their real names are out there in the public domain, nature will take its course.
I aint no racist fool,BUT I am exceedingly, overtly prejudiced against fools and especially fools who make it their duty to make me their enemy.Make of that what you will.I call it instinct.
No Surrender. No forgiveness and No fkn Mercy!

Now to enjoy 4 weeks in NYC.

PS – If ya wanna show these scum where you stand and buy a shirt at www.destroyer666.uk

MetalSucks quickly issued an apology for their attempted pogrom, crawled into a corner, and curled themselves into a fetal position:

It has recently come to our attention that members of Australian black metal band Deströyer 666 have been receiving death threats related to articles we published on MetalSucks last week.

All of us at MetalSucks are appalled. Under no circumstances do we condone violence, or threats of violence, against anyone for any reason. We encourage open discourse on this website and in our comments section, but it should be relegated to just that — conversation.

Additionally, we spoke with K.K. Warslut directly, and he vehemently denies all of the accusations leveled against him.

We apologize to any members of Deströyer 666 who have felt threatened or whose names have been dragged into the mud on account of our actions. We have taken down the prior posts about the band to avoid drawing further attention to the situation and will refrain from posting anything further on the matter.

#Metalgate: Invisible Oranges and MetalSucks Outraged Over Destroyer 666 NYC Show

metalsucks staff

Hipster metalcore websites Invisible Oranges and MetalSucks were outraged again over Destroyer 666‘s stage banter. Invisible Oranges was surprised that their hipster photographer was getting knocked around trying to take pictures from the middle of the mosh pit in a sold-out small club while Vince Neilstein MetalSucks whined about Destroyer 666 “fat shaming” Axl Rosenberg’s man tits. Cock rock and conservative politics represent a direct threat to their shtick selling social justice. Actual metal’s refusal to be deluded by their leftist revolutionary narrative as gullible minorities and unskilled workers unwilling to uplift themselves were threatens their raison d’etre of peddling corporate, lowest common denominator commodities. The underground‘s elitism is inherently conservative and leads to the eventual rejection of the bland and incompetent by the forgetful mainstream. Scapegoating to prop up metalcore and urban lumberjack atmospheric noise is another feeble attempt at a scenester Cultural Revolution.

#Metalgate: Axl Rosenberg of MetalSucks Calls for Pogroms Against Destroyer 666 and Nails

axl rosenberg

Axl Rosenberg, the founder of social justice warrior metalcore website MetalSucks, called blackened glam metal band Destroyer 666 racist over frontman K.K. Warslut’s altercation with masked antifacist thugs at a Danish festival. Earlier Rosenberg called Todd Jones from sludgecore band Nails a “scene bully” for titling their new album You Will Never Be One of Us, which he took as directed against social justice warrior internet agitators like himself.

Why metal is better than “social justice”

hipster_trap

As #metalgate rages on on Twitter, Facebook, YouTube and Tumblr, the people who are trying to force these views on metal are defending themselves by claiming that #metalgate doesn’t exist or is insignificant. The truth is that this agenda has been advancing for some time and it has a dirty secret.

The dirty secret of the “SJW” agenda in metal is that it is totally unnecessary. Despite my own sympathies with many of the ideas they hope to achieve, like better treatment of human beings, I suspect most of these people are just poseurs. They are adopting certain viewpoints that they think are necessary to get ahead socially. Nothing makes a person feel more powerful than to be able to call someone else ignorant and selfish, while (in their own minds) looking superior, intelligent and altruistic. Especially if you are coming from behind and feeling ashamed about your family origins or stature in life, it can make you feel like a god to have moral right on your side and to look much more advanced than those around you. This is just another shade of the broken social life in the modern world coming home to visit metal and use metal for its own ends.

But even more, these “helpful” demands from SJWs are totally unnecessary. This is metal, where if you can create the music, you can join in the fun. We have always had something better than feminism with women being present and respected in Nuclear Death, Mythic and Bolt Thrower. People of color have always been here in Thin Lizzy, Suffocation, Blasphemy and Mystifier. Metal bands come from all over the world and from every tribe, culture and religion imaginable. We tend not to mark a little box each time someone who is non-heterosexual, non-white and/or non-male joins our ranks, but they are there and always have been. In metal, there is no need for a crusade for equality because we already have it. Even better, we have done so without turning that into a crusade against those who are heterosexual, white and/or male. We just accept people as they are.

When #metalgate upsets people it is because they do not want to face the conflict between outsiders and metal, as is shown in this article on MetalSucks:

But my ultimate problem with #metalgate is that it’s entirely manufactured. No one, or no group, is banding together to try and change metal in any one specific way — the threat is entirely imagined. Certain social values enter the metalsphere simply because those values are spreading throughout society as a whole — this idea that “SJWs” failed with #gamergate so they’re now moving on to a different cause is total bologna. They’re entirely separate people!

Personally, I enjoy what Vince Neilstein writes but don’t read it that often, mainly because I don’t visit sites with ironic names that censor out the word “fuck” for reasons unknown. But while I think he’s normally on point, here he confuses a few things. First “those values are spreading throughout society as a whole” means society outside of metal is adopting these values, and now wants metal to bow down and conform. He’s basically taking a pro-#metalgate point of view there but I’m not sure he intended two. Second, he assumes that the people involved in resisting the SJW incursion are #gamergate people, when actually it’s people like myself in metal who are not from either side of the political spectrum. We hate politics in our music, metal has already addressed this issue, and we don’t want to follow the herd in whatever flavor-of-the-month the iconoclastic hipsters behind the SJW fad think is important.

Metal has never been about doing what everyone else is doing but it has also never been about being “ironic” and trying to be different so hard that we act randomly. Metal is its own law and has its own culture. From outside of that culture, as Neilstein writes, people are trying to push conformist social values on us. The best “activism” for all of us who love metal is to push back against that dominant paradigm and go our own way instead.

Metalsucks.net understands us

Thanks to a reader, who pointed this out:

THIS GUY HATES ALL THE BANDS WE LIKE

At least that’s what some dude at Anus.com (American Nihilist Underground Society, oh ok) would have you believe when he rips into several other well-respected metal bands that we like because, ya know, we like their music: Opeth, Cynic, Baroness, In Flames, Cannibal Corpse and many others.

His arguments against every band basically follow this format:

Band X is stupid because all they did was combine what Band Y and Band Z already did. Their first self-released EP was pretty cool, but after that they sold out. People listen to Band X to appeal to a certain lifestyle, not because they actually like the music, and they’re duped into doing so by superficial musical tricks. Only non-thinking automatons follow this band!

This article smacks of the self-important elitist attitude perpetuated by all-knowing “my taste is scientifically provable as ‘good’ music” message board trolls like Ziltoid. – MetalSucks.net

Well, it’s nice to have someone understand us. There’s two basic takes on life, music and everything: either there’s one reality and so there’s some standard of behavior, or everything is arbitrary and hey whatever you want is cool, man.

We’re from the “objective reality exists” camp, which Vince Neilstein alludes to with “my taste is scientifically provable as ‘good’ music.” Some music is just dumb; if you respect yourself, you owe something better to yourself. Your time is valuable.

It’s not a matter of intellekshual cogitation, either. Music is experienced at the level of the nerves, and plays directly with our emotions. But like anything in our world, we can analyze it and realize that if it’s vapid, we’re conditioning our brains to be stupider.

But here’s our basic review format for bands we don’t like, since Vince’s take was a little bit off:

Band X offers nothing unique stylistically or in content. In fact, it’s a derivation of known successes, but dumbed down so that more people will think they like it, not knowing better. Like good advertising, or the sermons of televangelist, it preaches to your weakness and not your strength. Feeling bad about yourself, you’ll comfort yourself with this insipid music, which appeals to a certain demographic which has weakness Y. If you listen to this, you’re going to make your life more miserable under the guise of enjoying it.

Let’s look at that for the favorite target around here, which is ARE YOU TALKIN TO ME? — sorry, I meant “Pantera”:

Pantera rips off the aesthetic style of Exhorder, Exodus, and Prong, and mixes it into the same Metallica-derivative crap they put out with Cowboys From Hell. That in itself would be bad, except this is music that dumbs down life into a few emotions: self-pity, righteous anger, and a desire to get loaded. Like a commercial for watery beer, it’s there to convince you that if your life sucks, a few cold ones and some tits swingin’ by in the breeze will make everything alright. Never mind that when you sober up, your life still sucks. But this album is basically Lady Gaga with guitars. It’s catchy, songs go nowhere, and it leaves you right where you started. People like it because it appeals to the psychology that says “Life has done me wrong and I want to be angry about it, but not really fix it.” As a result, this band mainly appeals to AOR fans with frustrating lives who want to claim they let loose on the weekends.

It’s not as far-fetched as Vince might think that what music we like is determined by our needs. If you respect yourself, and take yourself seriously, you’re going to want the most high-intensity stuff you can find. If you hate yourself, you’re going to want music that panders to you like a prostitute, tells you it’s not your fault, and lets you vent some very simple emotions before returning you to work the next day.

We intellectualize music here because we’re geeks — we love to read, program computers, climb mountains, build stuff, shoot guns and talk about philosophy. That’s our medium for understanding music and everything else. But we like any music that’s good, meaning it has a presence and something to communicate; we don’t like music that panders to our weaknesses under the guise of empowering us.

I do agree with this guy’s assessment of Sunn O))), however, so there’s that.

Good man. We think Sunn O))) is hollow plastic trash disguised as profundity so that people can get elitist and tell their friends, “You’re still listening to that low-brow death metal shit? Well I’ve moved up in the world into avant-garde, like this band that uses orchestras and mathematical theories and shit to be all cool. You’re still down there, but I’m up here. I’m fucking profound!”

And this is from people who like Stephen O’Malley and his other projects.

In the meantime, his arch nemesis (or animus?) Ziltoid says this:

As to the ANUS article (ha…”anus”), frankly, it’s not as wrong as you may think. The criticisms of In Flames (especially In Flames…), CoF, Cannibal Corpse, and Necrophagist are spot on and not worded nearly as badly as you make them out to sound. – Ziltoid

At this site, you’ll find lots of praise for At the Gates and Demilich, but also bands that the experts are gonna poo-poo for their simplicity and violence, like Ildjarn, Cianide, Master and Profanatica. We’re not elitists by format or instrumentation, but by the quality of the end product.

And if you’re reading this, I can guarantee that you already believe there’s an objective standard to music. Everyone hates something, whether it’s rap or noise or pop, and will base that opinion in some reason, such as “it’s not music” or “nothing happens.” If you disagreed, you’d be as happy listening to blower noise as the most fantastic metal band ever. Something to think about ;)
